Outreach Ministries
"Our Island Home Ministries" works with other agencies, churches and
groups to meet a variety of needs on Johns and Wadmalaw Islands. There
are many opportunities for ministry in our community. You are invited to
join in the work of the Outreach Committee. For more information about

Neighborhood Learning Center -
Lorrie Gray:
The Neighborhood Learning Center is a part of Our Island Home Ministries
which has received international recognition as Jubilee Ministry Center.
The Center provides one-on-one tutoring to students from First grade
through Middle school 3 days per week. In addition, tutoring is provided
for students who are working to obtain their GED and to those adult
students who are working to reach adult literacy. English Language
Learners receive tutoring individually and in groups. There is no charge
for any student who attends the Center. All services are provided by
volunteers from the communities of Johns Island, Seabrook, and Kiawah.
College Scholarship Program - Lori Leary:
Since 1991, the Church of Our Saviour outreach program has enabled 42
deserving, needy students from Johns Island to have a good start in higher
education. Our first recipient recently received a Masters Degree in
Education from Leslie University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Each student
is mentored by members of the Church who offer assistance and
encouragement.
Meals to the Homebound - Nancy Hall:
Meals to the Homebound is a Federally funded program administered locally
by Sea Island Comprehensive Health Care. Johns Island is just one of the
four nutrition sites as the program extends to Edisto, James and Wadmalaw
Islands. In the Johns Island program, there are 15 homebounds who receive
meals Monday through Friday. Twenty-four volunteers, most from the Church
of Our Saviour, are available to deliver the noon meal and bring a bit of
cheer to five of the homebounds. More funding is greatly needed to reach
many shut-ins on a waiting list. Meals are also available for those who
can pay and cost $2.00 a day or $10.00 a week.
The Motheread Program - Lorrie Gray:
The Neighborhood Learning Center provides a trained leader of Motheread to
parents in the community. Motheread assists parents in learning basic
literacy skills, how to read to their children, and basic parenting
skills. The groups are ongoing and interested parents can register for
them through the Center or through the local elementary school – Mt. Zion.
Adult Literacy Program - Lorrie Gray:
The Adult Literacy Program is a service provided by the Neighborhood
Learning Center to interested adults in the community. Adults are tested
and placed in program to help them obtain basic skills. Those ready to
take the GED are tutored in all areas.
Summer Enrichment Program - Lorrie Gray:
The Neighborhood Learning Center provides a summer enrichment program for
students from Johns and Wadmalaw Islands. Students are exposed to art,
music, literature, and science for one week during summer vacation time.

St. James AME Partnership - JKathy Smith & Rick Allison:
St James AME Friendship Covenant was established between the Church of Our
Saviour and St James AME Church to bring together two churches with
different ethnic backgrounds so that the two might worship, work, and
fellowship together in Christ’s love. Over the years the two churches have
combined efforts in ministries, services and good fellowship. This
relationship gives depth and meaning to all of our ministries.
Alzheimer's Respite Program - Laura Stefanelli:
The "Our Island Home Respite Program" is an Adult Day Respite Program
specifically for persons with Alzheimer's Disease and related disorders.
Also included in this program is a support group for caregivers, which
meets the 3rd Monday of each month from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The Program exists to help two groups of people: the caregiver and the
participant. First, caregivers are given a break from the difficult task
of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's Disease. Second, participants
are provided a safe and friendly environment where people with memory loss
can interact with others. In addition to serving these families, the
Program strives to provide education and training programs for both
caregivers and the community at large.
The Our Island Home Respite Program is able to run through support from
The Church of Our Saviour, a grant from Brookdale Foundation and donations
form generous individuals and businesses.
